Webb6 mars 2024 · The rare 7th-century Greek century B.C. sculpture was unexpectedly discovered during rescue excavations in the cemetery of the ancient city of Thira, in southeastern Greece, by the Theraean archaeologist Charalambos Sigalas. The archaic pupil of white Naxos marble, 2.48m high with the inset peg at its base, is almost intact. WebbHeinrich Schliemann. A pioneer in archaeology, conducted the first excavations of Mycenae in 1874, uncovering five graves in Grave Circle A. Various archaeologists in the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s continued his work excavating the palace and cemeteries. Schliemann was a pioneer in the discovery of the Aegean Civilization.
